Baghdad, 27 March 2015 – The newly appointed Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Jẚn Kubiš arrived today in Baghdad and immediately assumed his responsibilities as the Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and the United Nations top envoy in the country.

Mr. Kubiš of Slovakia was appointed by the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as his Special Representative for Iraq on 24 February 2015. He replaces former SRSG for Iraq, Mr. Nickolay Mladenov.

“I look forward to working with the Government and the people of Iraq to restoring security and stability, ensuring the return of the millions of internally displaced Iraqis to their homes, promoting inclusive cooperation, national reconciliation, as well as protection of the Human Rights for all”, Mr. Kubiš said.

“UNAMI and UN agencies, funds and programmes stand ready to work with all actors in Iraq in support of an integrated political, human rights and stabilization response to the current challenges Iraq is facing”, he also stated.
